How to Clean a BBQ Grill

Gas grills are a popular summertime appliance used to serve up backyard BBQs. If yours has accumulated a layer of grime over the past few cookouts, it’s time to clean your gas grill and restore it to like-new condition. It’s easier than you think.

Supplies to Clean a BBQ Grill

Don’t begin the cleaning process until you’re sure you have all of the following supplies on hand:

  • Large bucket
  • Dish soap
  • Rubber gloves
  • Scrub brush
  • Commercial grill degreaser
  • Long-handled wire brush
  • Old sponge
  • Steel wool
  • Toothpick or paperclip

Help your grill last for many summers to come – invest in a grill cover. Then, remember to “spot cleaning” after each use. This involves turning up the temperature to high for 15 minutes to burn off excess gunk from the grates. Allow the grill to cool slightly, and then brush the grates with a long-handled wire brush to remove stuck-on gunk. Finish by wiping down the exterior with a cloth or paper towel.

Remember to deep clean your gas grill at the end of the season so it’s ready to go next spring. Here are the steps you should take:

  • Make sure the grill has cooled completely, and the gas is disconnected.
  • Fill a large bucket with hot water and a few tablespoons of dish soap. Don a pair of rubber gloves and dip a scrub brush into the soapy solution. Polish the outside of the grill to remove soot and gunk.
  • For particularly tough jobs, use a commercial grill degreaser. Choose a food-safe version and follow the package instructions for the best results.

  • Remove the burner protectors, grates, and Venturi tubes, and soak them in the bucket of soapy water.

  • Use a toothpick or paperclip to clear the holes where the flame exits.
  • Scrub and rinse all the parts you removed from the grill. Leave them out to dry on the grass.
  • Once the grill and all removed parts are dry, reassemble everything.
  • If you performed this cleaning at the end of the season, cover the grill and retire it for winter.
